Another supper club, another restaurant checked off my bucket list.
La Casita is waaaay bigger than it looks on the outside. They have a modern authentic vibe going on the second you walk into the restaurant. Large bar to your left, plenty of seating room to your right, bright colourful walls, and fun, authentic Mexican decor to go with it all. If you walk more to the right you’ll see a spiral staircase that leads you downstairs. That’s where our group sat. We had a large table in the center of the room. This area looked like it was reserved for larger groups. Half of our party didn’t show up and the staff was kind enough to let us keep the extra table.
Sidenote: I love spiral staircases. I always told my parents that when I owned my own house one day, it needed to have a spiral staircase. So the fact that La Casita had one, I was excited.
Food-wise, we had a set group menu. Parties over 8 or more, they give you a set group menu. We were unaware of this when we came here originally, but our whole group was able to find something they enjoyed. To start we got a round of chips, queso, salsa and guac. The queso had to be my fave of the 3. Which is saying a lot because I live for guac. The queso being cheese based was already perfect, but they added an extra sprinkle of cheese right on top, so when you mixed the tortilla chips in there, it added an extra layer of cheesiness. I loved it.
For my main entree, I got the veggie enchiladas. It was a bit pricey – $18 for 2 enchiladas and a side of rice and beans, but hey, that’s what I get for eating Mexican food in Vancouver. The dish was filling, savoury, cheesy, and delicious.
To close it all off, we got a few orders of their house churros. Ah-mazing. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It was perfect.
Service was great. Being downstairs (away from the main hustle and bustle), service tended to be a bit on the slower side, but nonetheless still great. Our server was friendly and attentive. I was more so impressed that he carried all our dishes down that spiral staircase. Props.
If you’re in the Gastown area and craving delicious Mexican food that’s different than Tacofino and La Taqueria, come to La Casita. Your Mexican craving will be satisfied, no doubt.
