Check out a review on La Casita Gastown by Maggi
As a foodie, when I take on the responsibility of picking out places to eat, I do so seriously. I use my success to gauge my effectiveness, and today I think I did well. Although I went in having my work cut out for me. Today’s dinner was for a work function, and one of my coworker had very specific eating habits. Like she will try snails, but would refuse Madeleine’s from France. She ate to survive and not to enjoy, so finding a destination to impress the others, but would also cater to her, would be a tricky. Although, I usually find that Mexican food often caters to all, and it did so today. I also got her to vet the menu online before we walked in.
This is one of my partner’s favourite Mexican places, but whenever we dine here together, he always insists on sharing the same combo plate. So this would be the first time I was trying something different, and was excited to be able to write a more fulsome food review for the restaurant.
“La Casita” is marked with a lit up, wooden cactus out front. Inside, piñatas dangled from the ceiling and sombreros hung of the walls. The space was further decorated with Mexican folk art and detailed carvings over yellow painted walls and beside white draped. It was a cozy and casual setting with a bar and a basement suite, I have yet to visit.
One of my coworkers and I shared one of their “Super margaritas” in strawberry. It is a hefty glass that serves three for $24. It is also available in lime or mango, though we found the strawberry most enjoyable in its easy to drink sweetness. It was like a slushy where you didn’t feel the tequila until your cheeks flushed pink. The giant glass was a nice novelty, though unnecessarily heavy, given it wasn’t even filled to the top. And sharing with my coworker sitting across from me proved challenging. The straws were too shallow, and the sugar rim would go wasted as it was hard to sip from the rim.
“Stare deep into my eyes!” Sharing a monster strawberry #margarita with @zoryanabobbaz at @lacasita101 in #gastown. #magmeieats #drinks
Just another typical wednesday night.
Sharing a massive margarita at La Casita!
Another coworker too got a margarita, but his was made with top shelf, herradura reposado tequila and Cointreau, flavoured in lime. His glass was much smaller in comparison next to ours.
We all shared a plate of their “Texas nachos” to begin. It was fresh tri-coloured corn chips dressed with beef, bean, cheese, salsa, and we added guacamole for extra. The beans were whipped smooth, more like a cream then a chunky dip. It was a flavourful assembly that you did need to add chicken or beef on to for any additional flavour. We just wished that it came with more chips. The chips were our favourite, light, yet crisp with one of the best crunches.
Thankfully we did to get more, complimentary and undressed, severed with two sauces to dip in to.
One of us got today’s special: “Chicken Texas enchiladas”. These were corn tortillas rolled and covered with cheese, beans, and a chili pepper sauce. The three enchiladas also came with a serving spoonful of rice, salad, and beans on the side. She found it delicious all together. This was plenty of food at a good value.
Two others had the taco platter in al pastor. Two soft corn tortillas with pork, pineapple, onion, and cilantro. This like all all the other plates, als came with a side of rice, salad, and beans. Their tacos are also available in baja fish, chicken, and sirloin steak. They too found their plates delicious, finishing it clean. Although they did note that the pork was a little on the dryer side.
Chicken #quesadilla with a side of rice, beans, and vegetable at @lacasita101. #magmeieats #mexico
Our selective diner went with the “Chicken quesadillas”. They were handmade flour corn tortillas with pulled chicken and melted cheese. It also came in salsa Mexicana, chorizo, or mushroom and onion as a filling. She finished both quesadillas, and although she avoided the beans and rice, she did add in the side salad to give her bites some additional crunch and texture.
A good #chimichanga with deep fried tortilla and thick sauces is hard to find. Trying the ones @lacasita101. #magmeieats #mexican
I went for their “Chicken chimichanga”, having it recommended over the beef, chorizo, or mushroom and onion option. This was crispy fried, flour tortilla burritos stuffed with chicken, beans, and cheese; and covered in their homemade sauces and tomatillo salsa. It was a heavy plate, furthered with the addition of rice and beans as sides. I would have liked some more sour cream and/or some tomato slices, for their tang and freshness that I was missing. It would have also helped to rejuvenate the one tonal flavour mid way. Overall, it was best on the first bite, and a little tiring in the ones after.
Would I come back? – Yes.
Would I line up for it? – Yes.
Would I recommend it? – Yes.
Would I suggest this to someone visiting from out of town? – Yes.
A great place for some solid Mexican food, that’s why I brought my work associates here, to somewhere I have been, a place that I trust. There were no complaints, plates were cleaned, and everyone was too full for dessert. Success. Don’t deny your cravings.
